WATERVILLE, Me. -- The Tufts University softball team clinched first
place in the NESCAC East Division with an 11-3 victory at Colby College
on Saturday afternoon. As East Division champs, Tufts earns the right to
host the 2009 conference championship at Spicer Field May 1-3.
After sweeping Colby in a double-header at Tufts yesterday, the
Jumbos and Mules played a single game in Maine on Saturday due to
predicted rain in the Medford area. With the win, Coach Cheryl
Milligan's Jumbos improved to 24-0 overall and 9-0 in league play. Colby
falls to 11-7 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
Tufts scored eight runs in the fourth to pave the way for the
five-inning victory, which is their sixth mercy-rule win in NESCAC East
play. Senior Cara Hovhanessian (Farmington, CT) ripped a two-run
home run in the fourth inning and junior Christy Tinker (Woodbridge,
CT) smacked a two-run double. Senior Laura Chapman (Seattle, WA)
had an RBI double and classmate Samantha Kuhles (Somerville, NJ)
had a two-run single in the big inning.
Tinker also had an RBI double in the third inning and went 2 for 2
with two walks. Kuhles had two hits and three RBI, while senior Maya
Ripecky (Chicago, IL) finished with three hits and two runs. Senior
Danielle Lopez (Danvers, MA), junior Casey Sullivan (Berlin,
CT), Chapman and first-year Lena Cantone (Southington, CT)
also had two hits for the Jumbos.
Alyssa Lepore, Christine Gillespie, and Tory Starr all doubled for
Colby.
Tufts continues its busy weekend on Sunday when they play at
Wellesley College and against Eastern Connecticut at Wellesley. Game
times are 11 am and 1 pm, respectively.
