HARTFORD -- The Tufts University softball team set a new
program winning streak record with its 21st consecutive victory on
Sunday in a 7-4 win at Trinity College in NESCAC East Division play. The
21 in a row breaks the previous team mark of 20 straight wins during the 1995 (17) and 1996 (3)
seasons.
Sophomore pitcher Izzie Santone (Madison,
CT) improved to 10-0 in the circle with her second win of the
weekend, though she allowed 10 hits, five walks and four runs in her
roughest outing of the season. First-year 1B Lena Cantone (Southington, CT) contributed a
critical two-RBI double to help the undefeated and eighth-ranked Jumbos to
the record-setting victory. Tufts improves to a perfect 21-0 on the season and 6-0
in the league. Trinity falls to 9-10 overall and 2-4 in the NESCAC East. The Jumbos
swept the weekend series from the Bantams, including 8-0 and 8-4 wins on
Saturday.
Tufts scored three times in the first inning after a
leadoff single and stolen base from recently-crowned career hits leader
Sam Kuhles (Somerville, NJ). Senior CF Laura Chapman (Seattle,
WA) did the same in the third and scored to give Tufts a 4-1 lead.
The Jumbos
increased their advantage to 7-2 after a three-run fifth, highlighted by
Cantone's double.
The Bantams rallied
in the sixth with two runs, loading the bases on three straight singles
before a two-RBI single by sophomore Nicole Nardella (Beverly, MA) to
put the Bantams within three (7-4). After a walk loaded the bases again,
Santone was able to get out the jam, and then she closed it out in the seventh.
Cantone finished 2 for 4 with three RBI and a run to
lead Tufts. Junior SS Casey Sullivan (Berlin, CT) had two
doubles and senior CF Laura Chapman (Seattle, WA) scored two runs
and stole two bases to lead the Jumbos offense. Sophomore Katie
Stoltenberg (Montgomery, NJ) had three hits and scored two runs in the
game for Trinity, which out-hit Tufts 10-7. Nardella added two hits to the Bantam
offense.
Tufts is off all week until hosting Colby College in a
three-game NESCAC East weekend series that begins on Frdiay (Apr. 10).
Trinity hosts in-state rival Coast Guard on Wednesday.
