ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Sophomore Izzie Santone (Madison, CT) and
senior Lauren Gelmetti (Westfield, NJ) combined to pitch a
shutout against Holy Names University, and then senior catcher Cara
Hovhanessian (Farmington, CT) hit a two-run home run as part of a
five-fun first inning against Hamilton College, leading the Tufts
softball team to two more victories at the Sun West Tournament on
Thursday.
Tufts won 6-0 against Holy Names and 9-2 against Hamilton College. Now
10-0, they look to finish their week in California with a perfect record
when they play games against Hamilton again and Hamline University on
Friday.
Against Holy Names, Santone went four innings allowing four hits and a
walk, while Gelmetti allowed four hits in three innings. Only one Hawks
runner reached third base in the game. Santone earned her fifth win of
the week and Gelmetti got a save.
Offensively, senior 2B Danielle Lopez (Danvers, MA) and
Hovhanessian led the way for Tufts. Lopez was 2 for 2 with three runs
and an RBI. Hovhanessian was 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI,
including a two-run home run in the third. Senior RF Maya Ripecky
(Chicago, IL) was 2 for 3 with a run-scoring single in the first.
Senior 1B Ebony Thorpe had two hits for Holy Names.
Against NESCAC opponent Hamilton College later in the day, Tufts got up
big early and Gelmetti cruised through five innings allowing just one
hit. In addition to Hovhanessian's second home run of the day in the
first, Lopez and junior SS Casey Sullivan (Berlin, CT) both hit
RBI triples.
Hamilton pitcher Mandy Hyne settled down and held Tufts scoreless in the
second through fifth innings. The Continentals closed to within 5-2 with
two runs in the top of the sixth off Tufts junior Erin Gallagher
(Brooklyn, NY). Sophomore SS Leigh Sherrow and sophomore 1B Liz Reid
hit back-to-back singles to open the inning, with Sherrow scoring on a
wild pitch and Reid coming around on a base hit by senior 3B Kathryn
Kroleski.
Tufts added four runs in the sixth to take away any suspense. Ripecky
hit a three-run triple to highlight the inning. She finished 3 for 4,
while senior CF Roni Herbst (Montclair, NJ) was 3 for 4 with two
runs scored. Gallagher retired the Continentals 1-2-3 in the seventh,
including two by strike out.
