ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Sophomore pitcher Izzie Santone (Madison, CT)
won two games on Wednesday afternoon as the Tufts University softball
squad improved to 8-0 overall with a 4-2 win against Puget Sound and a
5-3 final over Doane College.
Santone went the distance against Puget Sound, allowing nine hits and
three walks, but just one earned run. Later against Doane, she came on
in relief and hurled five scoreless innings allowing one hit. She
improved to 4-0 overall.
Tufts took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third against Puget Sound with
senior 3B Samantha Kuhles (Somerville, NJ) singling home a run
and scoring. The Loggers scored an unearned run on Santone, with senior
1B Victoria Raeburn producing an RBI single. The Jumbos improved their
margin to 3-1 in the fourth as red-hot senior RF Maya Ripecky
(Chicago, IL) tripled to left and scored on a sacrifice fly by
first-year Lena Cantone (Southington, CT). Puget Sound closed to
3-2 in the fourth on a double by sophomore RF Caroline Moore and a
single by junior LF Amelia Kurashige-Elliott. Tufts scored the final run
of the game in the fifth when senior LF Roni Herbst (Montclair, NJ)
hit a one-out single, stole second and scored on a single by senior
2B Danielle Lopez (Danvers, MA).
Lopez finished 2 for 4 with two RBI to lead Tufts offensively. The
Jumbos had eight hits total off Loggers sophomore Auriel Sperberg. Aryn
Grause and Moore had two hits for Puget Sound.
Tufts trailed Doane 3-2 early in Wednesday's second game. Junior CF
Whitney Poole singled, stole second and scored on a squeeze bunt in the
first for the Tigers. Deirdre Cardoza had a run-scoring double and
scored in the second. The Jumbos scored twice in the first inning.
Kuhles led off with a double and scored on a failed pick-off attempt.
Lopez provided the game-winning RBI when she hit a two-run home run in
the third to put Tufts up 4-3. They added an insurance run in the fifth
with the help of a Doane error. Santone, who came on in relief of
starter Stefanie Tong (Burlingame, CA), had runners on second and
third with one out in the sixth, but was able to retire the next two
batters to kill the threat.
Tufts had just three hits off Tigers starter Katy Jones and reliever
Jennifer Liddell. Lopez was 1 for 2 with two runs and two RBI. Poole was
2 for 4 for Doane.
The Jumbos play Holy Names and Hamilton at Sun West on Thursday.
