Game Box Score
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Junior pitcher Lauren Gelmetti
(Westfield, NJ) went six innings allowing just one run, and the
Tufts offense was active in almost every inning, as the Jumbo
Softball team advanced to the championship round of the NESCAC
Tournament with an 11-1 victory over Trinity College in the winner's
bracket game at Wesleyan University on Saturday. The Jumbos won in
six innings due to the eight-run rule.
Tufts (27-8) will now wait for Trinity (16-14) to play Wesleyan in an
elimination game on Saturday. The winner of that game will face the
Jumbos later this afternoon with the conference title on the line.
Tufts will need to defeat their opponent just once to take the
crown, while the opponent will need to defeat the Jumbos twice to
take the title. The Jumbos will be attempting to win their second
straight conference championship and their fifth overall.
Gelmetti allowed just two hits and two walks during her outing.
She stranded a Trinity runner at third in the first inning, getting
a called third strike for the final out. The only other inning in
which a Trinity batter reached third was in the fourth when they
scored their only run. Jessica Tait hit a one-out single, went to
second on a walk, to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice
fly by Patricia Cipicchio. Gelmetti retired the last eight batters
to improve to 9-2 overall.
The Jumbos led 3-0 after the first inning on RBI singles from
sophomore 1B Christy Tinker (Woodbridge, CT), senior 2B
Danielle Lopez (Danvers, MA) and senior catcher Megan Cusick
(Albany, NY). The Jumbos made their lead 5-0 with two runs after
two were out in the second, including an RBI double by junior DH
Cara Hovhanessian (Farmington, CT). When Cusick slammed a
two-run home run in the third, Tufts led 7-0.
Trinity reliever Kristen Anderson held Tufts scoreless in the
fourth and fifth, but the Jumbos hit her for four more runs in the
sixth for an 11-1 margin. Sophomore RF Jenna Robey (St. Ann, MO)
brought home two runs with a single. The Jumbos got a 1-2-3
inning in the bottom of the sixth to end the game.
The Jumbos had 17 hits in the game, led by junior CF Laura
Chapman (Seattle, WA) and junior 3B Samantha Kuhles
(Somerville, NJ) with three each. Cusick continued a strong
tournament performance with a 2 4 day with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.
