LEWISTON, Me. -- Tufts University swept Bates College in convincing fashion Saturday in NESCAC East Division softball action, prevailing 7-3 in Game 1 before pounding the Bobcats with a 19-0 victory that ended after five innings.

Tufts improves to 25-8 overall with an 11-1 record in the NESCAC East. As the top seed in the East, Tufts will play Williams, the No. 2 seed from the NESCAC West, on Friday (May 2) in the first round of the four-team NESCAC Championships, held at Wesleyan University. The Jumbos close their regular season with a non-conference double-header at Springfield on Tuesday.

Sophomore Stefanie Tong (Burlingame, CA) earned the victory in Game 1 to go 8-0 on the season, despite allowing all three Bates runs over four innings. First-year Kim Miner (Concord, MA) earned the save with three shutout innings in relief, allowing no hits, walking only one and striking out four Bobcats.

The Jumbos did all their scoring in the second (four runs) and the fourth (three runs). They took advantage of two of Bates' seven errors in Game 1 in the second, and saw junior Roni Herbst (Montclair, NJ) hit an RBI single in the inning. Bates got two back in the third with RBI singles by Stacia Saniuk and Alex Bethel, then closed it to 4-3 with another RBI hit by Saniuk in the fourth. Tufts took control again in the fifth, scoring three runs on four hits, including a two-run single by junior Maya Ripecky (Chicago, IL).

Tufts rapped out 22 hits in Game 2. Both Christy Tinker (Woodbridge, CT) and Danielle Lopez (Danvers, MA) were 3 for 3 with three RBIs apiece, and junior Cara Hovhanessian (Farmington, CT) went 3 for 5 with six RBIs in the game. Tinker hit her seventh home run of the season and Hovhanessian clouted her fourth.

Bates plays host to Husson College in a non-conference double-header on Sunday at 1 pm, and finishes the season with a home double-header against Southern Maine on Monday at 3:30.
