MEDFORD -- The Tufts Softball team clinched its fourth straight
NESCAC East Division title with a double-header split against Trinity
College at Spicer Field on Saturday afternoon. The Jumbos won the East
pennant with a 2-1 victory in the first game, but Trinity gave Tufts its
first league loss with a 5-2 final in game two. With that victory, the
Bantams also clinched second place in the East and a spot in the
upcoming NESCAC Tournament.
First-year pitchers Izzie Santone (Madison, CT) for Tufts and
Kristen Anderson (West Haven, CT) for Trinity allowed just three hits
apiece in the first game. Santone did not walk a batter and allowed an
unearned run while striking out six. She retired the last 10 batters
that she faced. Anderson walked just one with no strikeouts.
Jumbo junior CF Laura Chapman (Seattle, WA) manufactured the
first run of the game in the third. She walked, stole second, and scored
after the ball was thrown into the outfield while she was stealing
third. Trinity scored an unearned run to tie it in the fourth.
First-year 2B Katherine Stoltenberg (Montgomery, NJ) led off with a
double down the line in right and took third when the ball was bobbled
in the outfield. She scored on a single by junior catcher Ariana Mullin
(Woodbridge, CT).
Chapman's speed was also a factor when Tufts scored the eventual
winning run in the fifth. She bunted for a single with one out, stole
second, went to third on a ground out and scored on a single by junior
3B Samantha Kuhles (Somerville, NJ).
Stoltenberg was the only player with two hits in game one.
Mullin hit a two-run home run, her fourth, in the bottom of the first
in game two to give the Bantams an early lead. Kuhles led off the Tufts
first with a bunt single, stole second and went to third on a passed
ball. She halved the Trinity lead to 2-1 by scoring when junior DP
Cara Hovhanessian (Farmington, CT) got into a rundown during a
double-steal play, with Kuhles crossing home plate before the tag was
made on Hovhanessian.
The Bantams scored three times unearned with the help of two Tufts
errors in the top of the second. The runs came across on a hit by pitch,
a fielder's choice and a failed pick-off attempt. Trinity starter
Gabrielle Sergi (Walpole, MA) and Anderson in relief did a nice job
protecting the Bantam lead. Tufts scored one more time on a single by
Hovhanessian and a double by sophomore 1B Christy Tinker (Woodbridge,
CT) in the fourth.
Sergi allowed three hits and two runs in four innings while picking
up her ninth win. Anderson earned a save with three innings of
three-hit, no-run relief. Mullin was 3 for 3 in the second game for
Trinity (14-10, 8-4 NESCAC East) and first-year 3B Nicole Nardella
(Beverly, MA) was 2 for 4.
Tufts (21-7, 8-1), which made five errors in the nightcap, was led by
a 2 for 2 game by Hovhanessian.
