MEDFORD -- Sophomore Stephanie Tong (Burlingame, CA)
pitched a complete game four-hitter, leading the Tufts softball team to
a 7-1 victory in a NESCAC East Division game against Trinity College on
Spicer Field Friday afternoon. Junior 3B Samantha Kuhles (Somerville,
NJ) was 3 for 4 with four RBI to spur the Tufts offense.
Tufts reached 20 wins for the season (20-6) with the
victory and improved their first-place lead in the NESCAC East with a
7-0 record. They are 13-1 in their New England schedule this spring. The
Bantams have now lost three in a row and are 13-9 overall and 7-3 in the
league.
Tong pitched better as the game went on, retiring the
last 10 batters that she faced. She improved to 6-0 for the season. She
struck out three and walked two. Junior Gabrielle Sergi (Walpole, MA)
took the loss for Trinity, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs in 4.2
innings.
The Jumbos scored three times in the second inning to
take a lead. Senior catcher Megan Cusick (Albany, NY) singled
home a run and scored a run. Kuhles also hit a two-run single in the
inning. Tufts added two more in the third on a solo home run by junior
Cara Hovhanessian (Farmington, CT) and a RBI single from junior
RF Maya Ripecky (Chicago, IL).
Trinity scored its only run off Tong in the fourth after
sophomore SS Patricia Cipicchio (Southmont, NC) drew a one-out walk. She
was singled to second, went to third on a fielder's choice and scored on
an infield base hit by sophomore RF Erika Klotz (Naperville, IL). The
Jumbos finished the scoring with two unearned runs in the fifth, both
coming on Kuhles' second two-run single of the game.
Cusick also had a solid day at the plate for Tufts,
finishing 2 for 3 with three runs scored and the RBI. Junior CF Laura
Chapman (Seattle, WA) had two walks and scored on both of them.
Tufts has now won nine in a row in the series against
Trinity. The teams continue their three-game series with a double-header
starting at 10:30 Saturday morning.
