Senior co-captain Megan Cusick's two-run single in the first game gave Tufts the lead

DANBURY, Conn. -- The 17th ranked Tufts softball team split a pair of games played on Sunday at Western Connecticut State University. The Jumbos defeated Wheaton College, 4-2, to improve their winning streak to 12 straight games in their first action. However, the host Colonials ended the streak with a 9-1 victory in the second game. Western Connecticut and Wheaton also played a game during triple-header action.

Against Wheaton, Tufts sophomore shortstop Casey Sullivan (Berlin, CT) gave her team a short-lived 1-0 lead with her sixth home run of the season, a solo shot, in the bottom of the first inning. Wheaton, 27-9, bounced right back in the top of the second with back-to-back home runs from Kristen Hunt (Milford, CT) and Nicole DeRosa (Greenwich, CT). The Jumbos went ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior Megan Cusick (Albany, NY) drove in two runs with a single up the middle and junior Maya Ripecky (Chicago, IL) pushed a run across with an infield out.

Junior Lauren Gelmetti (Westfield, NJ) earned the victory in the pitcher's circle and improves to 8-1 on the season. She allowed two runs on 10 hits while striking out four and walking one. Jodi Moynach (Worcester, MA) took the loss and is now 16-2 for Wheaton. She allowed four runs on seven hits, struck out three and walked two.

In game two, the Colonials scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning when Tufts threw the ball away and allowed Cortney Romyns (Newton, NJ), who led off the inning with a single, to score from second base. The Jumbos evened the score at 1-1 when sophomore Christy Tinker (Woodbridge, CT) drove in Sullivan from third while reaching base on an error by Western.

In the bottom of the fourth, Colonial Kristen Lugovich (West Haven, CT) drove in a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Angiolillo followed with a two-RBI double to give the Colonials a 4-1 cushion. Meghan Mammone (Stamford, CT) belted her third home run of the season, a three-run blast over the right-field fence in the fifth. Hartman hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to close out the game, 9-1, by virtue of the NCAA mandated 8-run mercy rule. It was her fourth round tripper of the season.

Slie improves to 11-5 on the season after going the distance. She allowed one unearned run on eight hits and walked two. First-year Izzie Santone (Madison, CT) took the loss for the Jumbos after allowing six runs, five of them earned, and eight hits. She struck out three and walked two. Gelmetti worked one inning and allowed three runs while striking out two and walking one.

The Jumbos are now 19-6 overall.
