WATERVILLE, Me. -- Sophomore 1B Christy Tinker (Woodbridge, CT)
had a home run in each game as the 17th-ranked Tufts University softball
team took 7-1 and 11-0 victories over Colby College in New England Small
College Athletic Conference East Division play Friday.
Tinker had a two-run homer in the fourth inning of the first game to
help the Jumbos pull away for good. She also had a leadoff blast in the
fourth inning of the nightcap. Junior 3B Samantha Kuhles (Somerville,
NJ) had three hits and two runs in the first game, while senior 2B
Danielle Lopez (Danvers, MA) and Tinker both had two hits, two
runs, and two RBI.
Junior pitcher Lauren Gelmetti (Westfield, NJ) pitched six
innings in the opener for her seventh victory of the season. Colby (6-9,
0-5 NESCAC East) stayed in the game in the first three innings of the
first contest. Christine Gillespie (North Andover, MA) singled and then
scored on an RBI double by Alex Essman (Littleton, MA) in the first
inning. Annie Wilson (San Juan Capistrano, CA) had the other hit in the
game for the Mules.
Tufts (17-5, 5-0 NESCAC East) scored 10 runs in the first three
innings of the five-inning second game. Sophomore SS Casey Sullivan
(Berlin, CT) homered, doubled, scored twice, and had three RBI for
the winners. Tinker, junior Cara Hovhanessian (Farmington, CT),
and junior Laura Chapman (Seattle, WA) all had two hits. Kuhles
was on base all four at-bats and scored three runs.
Three Tufts pitchers - first-year Izzie Santone (Madison, CT),
senior Heather Kleinberger (New City, NY) and sophomore Erin
Gallagher (Brooklyn, NY) - combined on the shutout.
