CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Rowan University softball team defeated Tufts University, 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament in Camden, NJ on Friday.

Tufts, ranked #20 and the third seed in the Regional, faces Wilkes University for the second time at 12:30 pm on Saturday. The winner of that game will play the loser of the Rowan/Rutgers-Camden game at 3 p.m. Second seeded Rowan, ranked #11, will play top seeded Rutgers-Camden on Saturday at 10 am.

Senior pitcher Colleen Oswald (Sewell, NJ) threw a complete game for her 13th shutout of the year. She struck out six batters to improve her record to 32-3. Shortstop Casey Bartolf (Jackson, NJ) went 2 for 3 with the Profs' lone RBI. The game's only run came in the bottom of the second inning. Catcher Kim Ryan (Monmouth Jct., NJ) led off with a walk. Jen Blair (Woodbury, NJ) came in to pinch run and advanced to second when 2B Lauren Navarro (West Milford, NJ) drew a walk of her own. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Bartolf followed with a single to right field that brought home Blair.

Tufts pitcher Erica Bailey (Scottsdale, AZ) threw six innings and struck out eight batters. She added a double at the plate that bounced off the fence. Freshman 3B Samantha Kuhles (Somerville, NJ) had two hits. The Jumbos had several opportunities to score. Freshman LF Laura Chapman (Seattle, WA) led off the game with a walk and stole second with one out. However, she was stranded. The Jumbos loaded the bases with two outs in the third and Kuhles singled and advanced to third in the fourth. They couldn't take advantage of either opportunity.

Rowan improves to 40-5 overall. It is the first time in school history that the Profs have recorded 40 wins in a season. The previous University record for win in a season was 37. Tufts' has a 27-15 mark.
