BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Tufts University softball team stayed alive in the NCAA Tournament New England regionals on Saturday with a 4-2 victory over Western Connecticut, the #6 ranked team in the nation according to the most recent poll. The Jumbos move on to play Pine Manor in another elimination game on Saturday at 4 pm.

After losing to Wheaton 5-4 in eight innings late Friday afternoon, the Jumbos face elimination and the end of their season in every game they play now. They rallied to a 3-0 lead over Western Connecticut. In the first, junior 2B Emily Ferrazza (Westminster, MA) led off with a single and scored on a double by junior 1B Tiffany Trahan (Chelmsford, MA). In the third, Trahan singled to right field scoring Ferrazza, who had singled, and pinch runner Beth Polisson (Swampscott, MA), who came on after junior SS Jen Mackey (Swampscott, MA) reached base by error.

Western closed the gap to 3-2 with a two-run third inning. Cherie Bailey led off with a single, Stacey Miehe followed with a bunt single, and then both scored on a Tufts throwing error. Those were the only runs the Colonials would get against Tufts starter Jodie Moreau (Clarksburg, MA). Tufts added an insurance run in the sixth when senior CF Randee McArdle (East Nassau, NY) led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman 3B Deana Davidian (Pelham, NY).

Ferrazza, Trahan and McArdle had two hits apiece for Tufts. Miehe, Shanna Fairchild and Keri Lynch had two hits for Western Connecticut, which out-hit the Jumbos 10-8. Moreau earned her 16th win. The loss was only the fourth of the season for the Colonials, and it eliminated them from the tournament.
