GELMETTI WINS SECOND NESCAC PITCHER AWARD OF THE
SEASON
MEDFORD --
For the second time in three weeks, Tufts University softball senior
Lauren Gelmetti (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) has been named the
New England Small College Athletic Conference's (NESCAC) Pitcher of
the Week. She was previously honored on April 6.
Gelmetti pitched three times for Tufts last week, helping Coach
Cheryl Milligan's team remain undefeated for the year at 32-0 by
earning two victories and a save. In 12.2 innings, she did not allow
a run and gave up just four hits, all singles. She struck out 16 and
walked just three while holding opponents to a .091 batting average
for the week.
In her first performance of the week, Gelmetti went four innings in
an 8-0 five-inning win at Babson on Wednesday. She gave up just one
hit and a walk while striking out eight of the 15 batters that she
faced. At Bowdoin on Friday in the beginning of a NESCAC East
Division series, Gelmetti tossed a seven-inning two-hit shutout,
striking out seven and walking two. In the second game of a
double-header at Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon, she came into a 6-3
game with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth
and got the next two outs to end the Polar Bear threat. Tufts
finished 12-0 in the division.
With those three appearances, Gelmetti improved to 13-0 with a 1.21
earned run average in 75 innings this spring. Her .191 batting
average against for the season is second-best in the conference.
Tufts has now won three of the five NESCAC Pitcher of the Week
honors this season. Sophomore Izzie Santone (Madison, CT/Daniel
Hand) was recognized on March 23. Together, Gelmetti and Santone
are 28-0 with 96 strike outs and a 1.15 earned run average in 165
innings pitched.
