IZZIE SANTONE RECEIVES THIRD NESCAC WEEKLY HONOR FOR TUFTS
SOFTBALL
MEDFORD --
After working 11.1 of a possible 14 innings on Saturday for the
Tufts Softball team, first-year pitcher Izzie Santone (Madison,
CT/Daniel Hand) has been selected as the New England Small
College Athletic Conference Player of the Week. She joins sophomore
pitcher Stefanie Tong (Burlingame, CA/University) and junior
3B Samantha Kuhles (Rutgers Prep) as Jumbos who have been
awarded either Player of the Pitcher of the Week by the conference
in 2008.
Santone was the winning pitching on Saturday morning against Trinity
College when Tufts clinched its fourth straight NESCAC East Division
title with a 2-1 victory. Santone pitched a seven-inning complete
game in the first game of a double-header that day, allowing just
three hits and one unearned run. She did not walk a batter and
struck out six. She retired the last 10 Bantam batters that she
faced and improved to 5-2 on the season with the victory.
When Trinity scored five runs in the first two innings of the second
game, Tufts coach Cheryl Milligan called on Santone again. She came
out of the bullpen and recorded 4.1 innings of three-hit, no-run
relief. She struck out six and walked one, giving the Jumbos a
chance to get back into the game that they could not take advantage
of.
For the day, Santone allowed just six hits and an unearned run in
her 11.1 innings. She struck out 12 Bantams and walked just one.
Trinity batted just .150 (6/40 off her for the day.
Tufts improved to 21-7 overall and 8-1 in the NESCAC East Division
by taking two out of three games against Trinity over the weekend.
Santone leads the Tufts staff with 16 appearances this spring. She's
5-2 with two saves and a 2.27 earned run average.
The Jumbos have three games left in NESCAC East Division play
against Bates this weekend. They will play in the conference
tournament at Wesleyan University May 2-4 as the East's top seed.
