JODIE MOREAU NAMED NESCAC SOFTBALL PLAYER
OF THE WEEK
MEDFORD - Tufts University senior pitcher Jodie Moreau (Clarksburg, MA/Hoosac Valley) was named NESCAC Player of the Week for her work since the start of the season for Softball team. Claiming the first award of the year, Moreau is leading the conference in pitching and is one of the main reasons Tufts is 2-0 in the NESCAC East and 9-5 overall.
With a 7-0 record in the team's first 12 games, Moreau currently has a 0.35 earned run average in 40 innings. With 32 strikeouts and just seven walks, Moreau has started her senior season where she left off last year when she led Tufts to the NESCAC Championship. Opponents are hitting just .174 of her so far.
The highlights of her season thus far are a one-hitter against NESCAC rival Williams College and a two-hitter against Concordia during the team's spring break trip to play in the Sun West Tournament in Orange, California. On March 18 Tufts beat Williams 8-0 and Moreau didn't allow an Ephs' hit until the fourth inning. To punctuate the win, she had a hit and a walk and scored twice. For the season Moreau is batting .300.
Not until the seventh inning was Concordia able to record a hit against Moreau as they lost 4-0 to the Jumbos on March 21. In this low scoring game, Moreau struck out six and walked one. She let up two hits in the seventh. In her nine appearances thus far, she has only allowed runs in one game, versus Wisconsin-Lacrosse on March 19. She had four shutouts along the way and made three relief appearances. One of the blankings came against perennial California power and Sun West Tournament host Chapman University.
Moreau entered her senior season with three Tufts records (strike outs in a season, wins in a season, and shutouts in a season). With her strong start this year, she's improved her career numbers to a 45-18 record with a 1.62 earned run average and 311 strike outs in 427.2 innings pitched. With her four shutouts in California, she set a new Tufts career mark with 18.
The Jumbos are seeking their sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance this spring. One of the keys to a successful softball program is a dominant pitcher, and the Jumbos have one in Moreau.
A biochemisty major, she attended Hoosac Valley before coming to Tufts.
