SALEM -- Senior co-captains Cara Cardigan (Nahant, MA) and
Whitney Hardy (Truckee, CA) scored goals to lead the Tufts
University women' soccer team to a 2-0 non-conference victory at
Salem State College on Wednesday afternoon.
The victory lifts Tufts to 7-4-1 overall and finishes their 2009
non-league slate with 3-2 record. Salem State falls to 8-6 overall with
their second consecutive loss.
Cadigan scored midway through the first period, her third goal of the
year, on an assist from classmate Fanna Gamal (Albany, CA) to
give Tufts the early lead.
Hardy iced the game with 19:32 remaining by scoring her team-leading
seventh goal of the season on another assist from Gamal.
The Jumbos out-shot Salem State 9-3 in the first half to keep the
pressure on Lady Viking goalie Lindsey Burke (Harvard, MA), who stopped
five shots in the first 45 minutes.
The second half was more of the same as Tufts used a 16-4 advantage
in shots overall to cruise to the 2-0 victory. Burke, who made eight
saves total, suffered the loss. Senior Kate Minnehan (Hopkinton, NH)
made one save and picked up the shutout victory for the Jumbos, who
remained unbeaten in their past four games (3-0-1).
Tufts travels to play #2 in the nation Williams College on Saturday.
The Lady Vikings travel to Westfield State for their next contest on
Saturday. The start time is set for 6:00 pm.
