Senior co-captain Whitney Hardy's pair of goals led Tufts to the NESCAC victory

SOMERVILLE -- Senior co-captain Whitney Hardy (Truckee, CA) scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the game and the Tufts women's soccer team went on to a 3-0 victory over Connecticut College in NESCAC play on Wednesday afternoon at Kraft Field.

The Jumbos have now won four straight in the league to improve to 4-2. They have victories in three of their last four games overall and stand 6-4 on the season. Connecticut College lost its fifth in a row to drop to 3-7 overall and remain winless in NESCAC at 0-6.

Tufts got up early when Whitney scored off a cross from the right side by classmate Ali Maxwell (Exeter, NH) just 3:55 into the match. Barely 10 minutes later, the Jumbos were able to capitalize on a turnover in the box by Camels goalie Jenna Ross (Longmeadow, MA). Senior co-captain Cara Cadigan (Nahant, MA) assisted on the second goal by Hardy at 14:13. Hardy leads Coach Martha Whiting's team with five goals, and three have been game-winners.

Connecticut College's Ali McKeigue had two of her game-high five shots in the early going, but the Jumbos had the better of the play for the first half with a 12-5 advantage in shots. Tufts keeper Kate Minnehan (Hopkinton, NH) did not need to make a save in the first half.

Tufts added its third goal of the first half at 27:04 when six-foot junior Sarah Nolet (Los Altos, CA) headed in a corner kick from sophomore Lauren O'Connor (Dudley, MA). Tufts later had four corners in the last 10 minutes of the half and would finish with a 13-0 margin in corners. However, they did not add to their lead and the game went to intermission with the Jumbos up 3-0.

Minnehan made her first save of the afternoon off Camels sophomore Jill Cote (Portsmouth, RI) halfway into the second half. The visitors would earn a slight edge in shots for the period, 6-5. However, Minnehan made four saves in the half to earn her second straight shutout and sixth of the season. Ross made six saves in total for the Camels, all in the first half.

Tufts has won nine straight against Connecticut College, including six by shutout.

The Jumbos play an important conference match against Trinity College on Saturday at Kraft beginning at noon. CC is at Middlebury on Saturday with an 11:00 am start.
