MEDFORD -- The 17th ranked Tufts women's lacrosse team
extended its winning streak to six games, the longest since 2006, with a
13-12 win over Bates College in a NESCAC game on Bello Field Saturday
afternoon.
The Jumbos (9-3, 4-3 NESCAC) came back from a 9-6
second-half deficit, and then had to hold off a late rally by Bates
(6-6, 2-5 NESCAC) to secure the victory.
The Bobcats scored the game's first three goals,
including one off a free-position shot by Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead,
MA) at 19:15 for a 3-0 lead. Tufts netted five of the next six goals,
all by different players, to lead 5-4 on Emily Johnson's (Yarmouth,
ME) strike with 1:50 to play until halftime. First-year Briana Gross
(Andover, MA) tied the game at 5-5 for Bates with a goal 1:04 prior to
intermission.
After the teams traded goals to open the second half,
Bates scored three in a row to lead 9-6 after back-to-back tallies by
sophomore Molly Dilworth (Yarmouth, ME) at 17:51. The Jumbos responded
with an even better run, scoring the next six goals for a 12-9 advantage
at the six-minute mark. First-year Amanda Roberts (Wenham, MA)
scored three of her game-high five goals for Tufts during the stretch.
Two Bates goals just 20 seconds apart by Gross and
Dilworth pulled the visitors within 12-11 with 4:33 on the clock.
Roberts scored the eventual game-winner for the Jumbos with 3:46 to
play, as Gross added the final Bates tally at 1:29. Tufts first-year
goalie Sara Bloom (Summit, NJ) made a key save in the final
minute to preserve the win.
Roberts added two assists for a seven-point game to lead
Tufts. Senior Sarah Williams (Bethesda, MD) and junior
Chrissie Attura (Yarmouth, ME) had two goals apiece for the Jumbos.
Williams also had an assist. Bloom finished with four saves.
Gross, senior Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, MA) and Dilworth
all finished with three goals to lead Bates. First-year goalkeeper Mara
Krueger (St. Louis, MO) played well and was credited with 10 saves.
