WELLESLEY -- The Tufts University women's lacrosse team got four goals from junior Maya Shoham (West Hartford, CT) and six points each by junior Chrissie Attura (Yarmouth, ME) and senior Sarah Williams (Bethesda, MD) in a 17-3 victory at Wellesley College that opened the 2008 season on Wednesday afternoon.

The Jumbos took a 3-0 lead early in the game off of two goals from Attura and another from sophomore Emily Johnson (Yarmouth, ME). Wellesley answered with a score from Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, VA) at 18:55 and then quickly followed it up with a goal from Haley Geller (Berkeley, CA) that brought the score to 3-2 with 18:31 remaining in the half. Tufts went up 4-2 on a goal from Shoham, but the Blue's Whitaker converted a free-position shot at 14:44 to cut the lead to 4-3. Tufts then scored five straight goals to take a 9-3 lead at the half, with a goal and two assists by Williams leading the run.

The second half was all Tufts as the Jumbos scored eight more times to seal the 17-3 victory. From the 11:49 mark of the first half, Tufts out-scored Wellesley 13-0 over the remainder of the game. Williams, Attura and sophomore Jenna Abelli (Framingham, MA) all scored a goal with two assists in the second half for Tufts.

Making her collegiate debut, Jumbo first-year goalie Sara Bloom (Summit, NJ) saved 12 shots for the victory. Along with Shoham's game-high four goals, Attura had three goals and three assists while Williams tallied two and four. Junior Courtney Thomas (Needham, MA) finished with three goals. Sophomore Alyssa Kopp (Hollis, NH) was solid defensively for Tufts, scooping up eight ground balls and causing three turnovers.

Wellesley's Kristen Jaroncyzk (Manhasset, NY) was good in net for the Blue picking up 14 saves. Geller's 10 shots for Wellesley were a game-high.

Tufts jumps right into the NESCAC season when they travel to Williams College on Saturday for an 11:00 in the morning start. Wellesley is back in action on Saturday at 3:00 pm against Mount Saint Vincent at home.
