HARTFORD, Conn. -- With an easy 3-0 victory over Williams College
in the semi-final round of the 2009 NESCAC Field Hockey
Championships, second-seed Tufts advanced to the championship game
for the second straight year.
The Jumbos (15-1) will play host Trinity College in the conference
final on Sunday at noon. Tufts is vying for its first NESCAC title.
Coach Tina McDavitt's team lost to Bowdoin, 1-0, in the NESCAC title
game last year. The Trinity Bantams are the only team to beat Tufts this
year, 2-1 in overtime on October 17.
Tufts is ranked #4 in the nation and Trinity is #5. The winner of
tomorrow's NESCAC Championship game will earn the league's automatic bid
to the NCAA Tournament, while the loser will likely receive an at-large
berth.
Against the Ephs, Tufts junior forward Tamara Brown (Annandale,
VA) assisted on the game's first goal in the 11th minute of play,
and then scored the second moments later as the Jumbos jumped out to a
quick 2-0 lead at Trinity College's Sheppard Field. Tufts received
first-half goals from junior forwards Melissa Burke (Walpole, MA)
and Brown less than two minutes apart and a third from senior forward
Michelle Kelly (Downingtown, PA) with 10:32 remaining before the
break as the Jumbos dominated play from the opening whistle. Jumbo
junior Jess Perkins (Barrington, RI) and sophomore Lindsay
Griffith (Wilmington, DE) also recorded assists.
The Jumbos totaled 18 shots in the first half against just two for
Williams and outshot them, 23-3, for the game. Tufts sophomore
Marianna Zak (Concord, MA) needed to make just one save in each half
to earn the shutout victory. The blanking was the fifth straight for the
Jumbos, who have not allowed a goal since that loss to Trinity. The win
is the fifth in a row overall for Tufts and its fifth straight over the
Ephs.
Junior Katrina Tulla (New Canaan, CT) had 10 saves in the Williams
cage. The Ephs, the fifth seed in the tournament, ends its season at
6-10.
