WENHAM, Mass. -- Senior co-captain Amanda Russo (Garden City,
NY) became the fourth Tufts University field hockey player to
score seven points in a game this season when her three goals and
one assist led the fifth-ranked Jumbos to a 9-0 victory at Gordon
College in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.
Russo joined offensive teammate Tamara Brown (Annandale, VA),
who scored seven points in games against Connecticut College, Colby and
Endicott. With the rout at Gordon, Tufts bounced
back in a major way from its first loss of the year against Trinity
on Saturday. The Jumbos improved
to 11-1 overall, and now have 56 goals this year for the second-best
single-season total in team history. The Fighting Scots are now 3-12 overall.
The Jumbos finished with a 38-1 advantage in shots for the game and
13-1 in penalty corners. Brown
scored just 53 seconds into the game to get things going. Russo scored
her first goal and assisted on a score by sophomore Lindsay Griffith
(Wilmington, DE) in the last two minutes of the first half and the
Jumbos were up 5-0 at intermission.
In the second half, senior co-captain Margi Scholtes (Grosse
Pointe, MI) scored on a penalty stroke for the second time this
season, putting Tufts up 6-0. Two more goals by Russo, and first-year Rachel Gerhardt's
(Worcester, MA) first collegiate goal wrapped up the scoring.
Gordon's Alicia L'Heureux made 15 saves in the game, while Julia Ham
also made two defensive saves for the Fighting Scots. Jumbo goalkeepers
Marianna Zak (Concord, MA) and Katie Hyder (Winston-Salem, NC)
shared the team's sixth shutout of the season, with Zak stopping
Gordon's only shot on net. Brown finished with two goals and an assist
for Tufts, while senior Michelle Kelly (Downingtown, PA)
had a goal and two assists.
The Jumbos play a NESCAC game at Williams College on Saturday
starting at 1:00 pm. Gordon plays at Regis on Tuesday.
