MEDFORD -- Junior Tamara Brown (Annandale, VA) figured in
every Tufts University goal on Thursday as the Jumbo field hockey
team remained undefeated with a 5-0 non-conference victory against
Endicott College at Bello Field.
Brown scored two goals with three assists for a career-high seven
points to lead the Jumbos, who improved to 6-0 overall. Coach Tina
McDavitt's squad has now won 26 consecutive regular-season games. Senior
co-captain Amanda Russo (Garden City, NY) added two goals for the
hosts. Endicott (4-6) lost its fourth game in a row.
The visiting Gulls did a good job limiting Tufts' scoring chances for
most of the first half. However, Brown assisted two goals by Russo 4:10
apart at 28:31 and 32:41 to put the Jumbos at a 2-0 advantage. On both
occasions, Brown drew attention with the ball in the goal mouth and
tapped passes to a wide-open Russo for the goals.
Tufts junior Katie Hyder (Winston-Salem, NC) got her first
start of the season in goal and kicked out the first shot she saw by
Endicott's Joanne Reid (Clarksville, MD) during a penalty corner
opportunity. The Jumbos had a 14-1 advantage in shots for the first 35
minutes and 6-1 in corners.
Tufts turned it on early in the second half, scoring three times in a
six-minute stretch. Brown scored her first of the game after taking a
pass in close from sophomore Lindsay Griffith (Wilmington, DE) at
43:20. Senior Michelle Kelly (Downingtown, PA) converted a pass
from Brown at 45:55, and then Brown finished the scoring with a nice tap
in of a pass by first-year Lia Sagerman (LaJolla, CA) at 49:28.
Endicott had a good scoring chance late in the second half on a
penalty corner. Sophomore Alexandra Parese (Wilton, CT) was positioned
right in front of Hyder, who saved Parese's redirect to preserve the
shutout.
Tufts finished with a 23-7 margin in shots, including 13-2 on goal.
The penalty corners count was tilted 14-3 in favor of the Jumbos. Hyder
had the two saves, while Gulls first-year Taylor Teixeira (Exeter, NH)
stopped seven Jumbo shots.
Brown is closing in on two Tufts career scoring records. With seven
goals and 18 points this season, she has 40 goals and 90 points overall.
The program records are 44 goals and 97 points by Aryn Landau from
1987-90.
Tufts returns to NESCAC play on Saturday at Bates with a noon start.
The Gulls host The Commonwealth Coast Conference rival Anna Maria on
Saturday at 1:00.
