Game Box Score

Tamara Brown moved into second on the Tufts all-time scoring list

MEDFORD -- Junior Tamara Brown (Annandale, VA) led a persistent Tufts offensive attack with two goals and an assist as the third-ranked Jumbo field hockey team earned a 4-0 non-league victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs on Bello Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Jumbos attempted 42 shots in the game and put 21 on goal, led by Brown's 11 shots total and seven on goal. Tufts had 24 shots in the first half and added 18 more in the second half. UMass Dartmouth senior goalie Seana Golden (Somerset, MA) was excellent, making 17 saves for the visitors. At the other end, the Jumbo D allowed just six shot attempts including two on goal as keepers Marianna Zak (Concord, MA) and Katie Hyder (Winston-Salem, NC) shared a shutout.

Tufts scored on its first shot of the game to set the tone. Senior co-captain Amanda Russo (Garden City, NY) flicked a pass to an open Brown in front of the goal just 1:17 into the game to make it 1-0 Jumbos. The same pair connected again with Russo assisting on Brown's second goal of the game and fourth of the season at 25:19 for a 2-0 Tufts lead.

Brown set up the next goal late in the first half. Her pass into open space was collected by junior Melissa Burke (Walpole, MA), and she beat Golden on the far side to help Tufts take a 3-0 lead into halftime. Zak played the first 35 minutes in goal for the Jumbos and made a good stick save on a shot during a penalty corner by UMD's Stephanie Kinchla (Falmouth, MA).

In the second half, Tufts coach Tina McDavitt substituted heavily and the Jumbos reserves added to the margin late in the game. A flurry in front of the Corsair cage that featured saved shots by first-years Lia Sagerman (LaJolla, CA) and Missy Karp (Berwyn, PA) resulted in the first collegiate goal by first-year Kerry Eaton (Norfolk, MA) with 2:10 remaining. Hyder had made her contribution to the shutout with a kick save on a shot by Corsair first-year Erica Allan (Amherst, MA) earlier in the half.

Brown, who set Tufts single-season scoring records with 28 goals and 61 points last season, moved into second place on the all-time Tufts scoring list with her five-point game. She currently has 37 goals and seven assists for 81 career points in 37 games. The Tufts records are 44 goals and 97 points by Aryn Landau from 1987-90.

The win was the 24th in a row during the regular-season for Tufts, which improved to 4-0 overall. The Corsairs lost for the third time in four games, dropping to 3-4.
