MEDFORD -- Junior Tess Guttadauro (Carlisle, MA) scored a
goal in each half as the third-ranked Tufts University field hockey
team posted a 2-0 NESCAC victory over #16 Amherst College on
Saturday afternoon at Bello Field.
The victory improves Tufts to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
It was their 23rd regular-season victory in a row. Amherst, which was
looking to pair an upset of 2008 NCAA runner-up Tufts with their victory
against defending NCAA champion Bowdoin on September 12, fell to 2-1 and
1-1 in the league.
The Jumbos had their first of two goals disallowed in the game early
in the first half. Amherst keeper Emily Vitale (Cheshire, CT) later
kicked away a good chance by Tufts junior Jess Perkins (Barrington,
RI). The hosts got on the scoreboard with 15:18 remaining during a
penalty-corner opportunity. Guttadauro was in the right place when the
ball deflected to her near the right post and she knocked it in for her
first goal of the season. The Tufts defense limited the Lord Jeffs to
just one shot in the first half and it was 1-0 Jumbos at the break.
The Lord Jeffs put some pressure on the Tufts cage early in the
second half, but to no avail. Vitale turned away four Tufts shots during
a flurry in the middle of the period. When the Jumbos got one past her
at 5:20, it was ruled too high and no goal. However, at the 2:27 mark
junior Melissa Burke (Walpole, MA) fed a beautiful pass through
traffic to Guttadauro at the right post again during a corner attack.
Her goal gave the Jumbos some breathing room at 2-0.
Tufts finished with a 27-6 advantage in shots and 12-4 in penalty
corners. Vitale stopped 11 shots for the visitors. Amherst did not have
a serious scoring opportunity, with Tufts sophomore keeper Marianna
Zak (Concord, MA) making two saves. The shutout was her first of the
season.
The Jumbos remain at home to play UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday (Sept.
23) at 4 pm. Amherst gets right back at it, hosting Bates tomorrow at
noon.
