Game Box Score

Sophomore Melissa Burke scored two second-half goals

MEDFORD -- Sophomores Tamara Brown (Annandale, VA) and Melissa Burke (Walpole, MA) and each scored two goals to lead the #12 Tufts field hockey team to a 6-0 NESCAC win over Connecticut College at Bello Field on Saturday afternoon. Brown, who also added an assist, tallied twice in the first half while Burke tallied twice in the second frame.

Tufts came out gunning from the start, firing 22 shots at Camel goalie Robin Edwards (Concord, MA) in the first half alone. The Jumbos scored their first goal on a tap-in by Brown with 19:54 remaining. Sophomore Jess Perkins (Barrington, RI) assisted on the goal. The tally seemed to fuel the Jumbos already relentless attack as they added two more goals before the half. Junior Amanda Russo (Garden City, NY) fired home a pretty pass from sophomore Tess Guttadauro (Carlisle, MA) on a penalty corner to make it 2-0. Then with only 1:25 remaining Brown struck again, scoring on a terrific individual effort to make it 3-0 Jumbos at the half.

The second half was more of the same as the Tufts kept pressure on the Camels. Burke pounded home a loose ball for the first of her two second-half goals. Then just under six minutes later Guttadauro took a cross-field feed on a penalty corner from Perkins to put Tufts up 5-0. Guttadauro finished the day with a goal and an assist. The Jumbos were not finished however, as Burke capped the day off with a goal assisted by Brown with 7:57 remaining.

Tufts finished with a 35-6 margin in shots and 18-2 in corners. Edwards stopped 11 shots for the Camels. First-year Marianna Zak (Concord, MA) and sophomore Katie Hyder (Winston-Salem, NC) were not busy in the Tufts cage, each playing a half and making one save for the combined shutout.

Tufts is off to a 5-0 start and hope to keep it going as they play Bates on Homecoming next Saturday in Medford. Connecticut College travels to Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday for a non-league tilt.
