Game Box Score

MEDFORD – Senior goalkeeper Marilyn Duffy-Cabana (Amesbury, MA) made six stops, junior Katie Pagos (Short Hills, NJ) made a crucial defensive save and the entire Tufts University field hockey team played a smart and intense defensive game to earn a 2-0 upset win over # 4 Williams College in NESCAC action on Saturday.

On a windy and brisk fall afternoon, both teams battled hard from the opening whistle as much was at stake. Williams was looking to keep pace atop the league, while Tufts was looking to try to finish among the top four and host a playoff game.

The Jumbos scored their first goal as sophomore Marlee Kutcher (Chevy Chase, MD) took a back-door feed from senior Stacey Watkins (St. Louis, MO) to give the Jumbos lead 20 minutes into the game. Soon after, Pagos - who was outstanding all afternoon - saved a sure Williams tally with a well-timed and athletic defensive save. Both plays helped the Jumbos gain some momentum as they carried play for the rest of the half, which ended 1-0.

In the second half, Williams came out gunning and earned several penalty corners early, but to no avail. The Jumbos, however, struck again on a corner of their own as junior Ileana Casellas-Katz (Denmark, ME) fed sophomore Brittany Holiday (Wellesley, MA) for the tap-in goal. From there, the Tufts defense held strong as they did all afternoon to preserve the win on Parents' weekend in Medford.

The shutout was the fourth of the season for Tufts (8-4, 5-3 NESCAC), but clearly their most impressive as Williams (10-2, 6-2) came into the game having scored a whopping 37 goals in 11 games. The Ephs have now lost two straight after winning 10 in a row to open the season.

Senior Emily Wasserman (Englewood, CO) finished with four saves for the visitors.
