MIDDLETOWN, Conn. --- A.J. Smith, a senior attackwoman from Mahopac, N.Y., assisted on the game-winning goal in the first half, then scored the insurance marker in the second half to lead Wesleyan University to a 2-0 victory over Tufts University in the championship game of the ECAC New England Division III field hockey tournament, played at Wesleyan here this
afternoon. With two goals and three assists over the three games of the tournament, Smith was named most valuable player.

Avenging a 1-0 loss to Tufts during the regular season, Wesleyan, seeded second in the ECAC playoffs while Tufts was seeded eighth, finished its winningest season ever with a 13-4 mark. The Jumbos finished 10-7 after a 1-3 start. They advanced to the ECAC Championship Game with 1-0 overtime wins versus top seed Bates and fourth seed Williams.

Maura Trail gave Wesleyan all the scoring it needed when she redirected a free hit by Smith into the Tufts net at 18:12 of the first half for her ninth goal of the year. Nine minutes into the second half, Smith took a shot from the left side that was saved by Tufts goalie Dena Sloan (Millburn, NJ), who had five saves in the contest. The rebound went back to Smith and she put the ball past Sloan on the second try.

Wesleyan goalie Taryn Hutchins-Cabibi need to make just two saves to post her sixth shutout of the year and 16th of her career in 44 starts.
