Wednesday, August 6, 2008COACH TINA MCDAVITT TO PLAY FOR U.S.
INDOOR TEAM AT PAN AMERICAN GAMES
MEDFORD --
Tufts University field hockey coach Tina McDavitt will
represent the United States as a member of the 2008 indoor field
hockey team at the Pan American Games to be held November 19-23 in
San Juan, Argentina.
McDavitt, a former standout at Boston University and the coach at
Tufts since 2004, was previously a member of the U.S. indoor team
that won a silver medal at the Pan Am Games in December 2005. She
was one of 73 players who tried out for the indoor team in early
April this year, and was then named to the 12-member Pan Am team in
July.
"It is exciting to be able to represent the country and continue to
play field hockey," McDavitt said. "We had a disappointing loss in
the gold medal game at the last Pan Am Games, so I'm looking forward
to having the opportunity to improve my own game and hopefully, as a
team, win the gold."
A 2000 BU graduate, McDavitt was captain of the 1999 team and led
the Terriers to an undefeated America East Conference championship
that season. An assistant at Holy Cross prior to Tufts, McDavitt won
two Massachusetts state championships playing with the Walpole High
School team in 1994 and 1995. She was the Regional Coaching Director
for USA Field Hockey's Futures Program from 2003-06.
The Tufts team enjoyed one of its finest season in 2007 under
Coach McDavitt. The Jumbos tied the record for wins in a season with 13,
earned the program's first NCAA Tournament victory and finished with
the #15 ranking in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA)
poll.
The USA team will be joined by teams from Argentina, Chile, Mexico,
Paraguay and Peru at the 2008 Pan Am Games. The US will play
Paraguay in its opening match on Wednesday, November 19. Their
schedule for Thursday, November 20 includes two games against Peru
and Argentina. On Friday (Nov. 21), the US plays Mexico and Chile.
The tournament play-off, based on round-robin standings, will be held
Saturday-Sunday November 22-23.
