Monday, October 27, 2008TWO GOALS VS. TRINITY GIVE BROWN
SECOND NESCAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD
MEDFORD --
Sophomore Tamara Brown (Annandale, VA/W.T. Woodson) powered
the Tufts Field Hockey team offensively to another clutch victory on
Saturday at Trinity College, 2-1 in overtime. With the win, Tufts
maintained first place in NESCAC and Brown was named the
conference's Player of the Week for the second time this season.
In the team's only game of the week, Brown tallied both of the Tufts
goals at Trinity. She had the first goal of the game late in the
first half to put Tufts up 1-0. After Trinity tied the contest with
a goal off a penalty corner at the end of regulation, Brown scored
the decisive goal 2:22 into overtime for the win. Sophomore
Amanda Roberts (Wenham, MA) assisted both goals.
Tufts, ranked #1 in the New England East Region and #5 in the
nation, remained perfect at 12-0 (8-0 NESCAC). Trinity, ranked #2 in
the New England West Region and #9 in the nation, fell to 11-2 (6-2,
NESCAC).
Brown now has 17 goals through 12 games, one goal shy of the
program's single-season record. Ileana Casellas-Katz scored 18 goals
for Tufts last season. Brown is third overall in the league for
goals and points (36) this fall. Her two goals at Trinity gave the
Jumbos 53 for the season, a new program record that surpassed last
season's final total of 52 goals.
After scoring five goals with an assist in her first season with the
Jumbos last season, Brown emerged as the team's leading scorer right
away this fall. She scored a hat trick in their 10-1 season-opening
win over Wesleyan. She was the NESCAC Player of the Week in the
second week of the season after scoring four goals in two games.
Remarkably, Brown has scored goals in all but one of the team's 12
games, including two hat tricks and two two-goal games. Six of her
strikes have been game-winners.
With overtime wins against Middlebury and Trinity behind them, Tufts
travels to Bowdoin on Friday for their biggest game of the season.
The winner will secure first place in the league and earn the top
seed for the 2008 conference tournament that starts on Sunday (Nov.
2).
