MEDFORD --
The Tufts University field hockey team, which will play in the
program's first-ever NCAA "Final Four" this weekend, had four
players named to the 2008 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA)
Division III All-New England West Region first team today.
Sophomore Tamara Brown (Annandale, VA), senior tri-captain
Brittany Holiday (Wellesley, MA), sophomore Amanda Roberts
(Wenham, MA) and junior Margi Scholtes (Grosse Pointe, MI)
were the Jumbos named to the first team. Tufts was the only team
with four players on the first team. Bowdoin College, also in the
NCAA "Final Four", was next with three.
Brown leads the Jumbos in scoring with 23 goals and five assists for
51 points, school single-season records for both goals and points.
Holiday, who scored the game-winning goal on a penalty stroke in the
team's 2-1 victory against The College of New Jersey in the NCAA
Quarterfinals on Sunday, has six goals and three assists this fall
and has converted all four of her penalty stroke attempts. Roberts,
who scored her first collegiate goal against TCNJ to tie the score
at 1-1 early in the second half, is terrific athlete who is key to
the Jumbos' transition from defense to offense. Scholtes is the New
England Small College Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the
Year and the primary striker on the team's penalty corner attack.
Tufts, 18-1 overall and ranked #4 in the NFHCA national poll, plays
#1 Messiah College in the national semi-finals on Saturday at
Ursinus College. Bowdoin and Ursinus meet in the other semifinal.
The national championship game is on Sunday.
