CASELLAS-KATZ CAPTURES FIRST NESCAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD
MEDFORD -- After scoring two goals at Colby College in the
season-opener on Saturday afternoon, leading the Tufts field hockey
team to a 3-1 victory, senior co-captain Ileana Casellas-Katz
(Denmark, ME) has been named the first New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week in field hockey for
the 2007 season.
The Jumbos trailed 1-0 early when Casellas-Katz scored
back-to-back goals to put the visitors in the lead. Her first goal
came at 11:53 of the first half to knot the game at 1-1. She then
scored her second early in the second half (38:35) for the eventual
game-winning goal. Both scores came off penalty corner opportunities
and were assisted by Michelle Kelly (Downington, PA) and
Corey Green (Danbury, CT), respectively.
The strong 2007 debut saw Casellas-Katz pick up where she left
off for Coach Tina McDavitt's Jumbos. She was an All-NESCAC second
team selection last fall after leading the Jumbos with nine assists
and adding four goals for 17 points. Her 42 shots also led the team.
She led the 2005 team in scoring with seven goals and three assists
for 17 points after scoring two goals during her first season in
2004. She's on the verge of breaking into the team's all-time top 10
for scoring with 15 goals and 12 assists for 42 points.
Tufts won three NESCAC Player of the Week awards last season.
Dating back to last season, Jumbos have now won the award four times
in the last 10 weeks that it has been selected.
