FIELD HOCKEY AWARDED FOR NATIONAL ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

MEDFORD -- The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) has announced its 2006 Division III National Academic Squad and National Academic Team Award, and the Tufts University Jumbos were honored on both accounts.

The National Academic Squad program recognizes those collegiate student-athletes who have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.30 through the first semester of the 2006-07 academic year. The National Academic Team Award recognizes those institutions that achieve a minimum GPA of 3.0 during the first semester of the 2006-07 academic year.

The Tufts team, coached by Tina McDavitt, is among a group of 81 teams to earn the National Academic Team Award. With 11 players on the National Academic Squad, the Jumbos were one of the best represented teams in the country.

Earning the National Academic Squad nods were senior co-captain Marilyn Duffy-Cabana (Amesbury, MA/Amesbury), junior Corey Green (Danbury, CT/Danbury), sophomore Brittany Holiday (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley), sophomore Tess Jasinski (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park and River Forest), junior Ileana Casellas-Katz (Denmark, ME/Fryeburg Academy), first-year Emma Kozumbo (Baltimore, MD/Bryn Mawr School), sophomore Marlee Kutcher (Chevy Chase, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase), senior Kathleen Martin (Cumberland, ME/Yarmouth), first-year Margi Scholtes (Dearborn, MI/Grosse Pointe South), sophomore Dana Svendsen (North Andover, MA/North Andover) and senior co-captain Stacey Watkins (St. Louis, MO/John Burroughs).

Tufts hosted a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Tournament game for the first time in 2006 and defeated Trinity, 2-1. The Jumbos finished 11-5 overall, the team's best mark since the 1998 team went 11-4. Watkins and Casellas-Katz were voted to the All-NESCAC team for their performance on the field.
