GAUDET, POLVERINI, LIONETTI ARE FIELD HOCKEY ALL-STARS

MEDFORD - The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced their Regional All- Americans this past Monday (Nov. 13) and three Tufts University Athletes recieved recognition. Senior co-captains Colette Gaudet (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and Amy Polverini (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) were named to the First Team All-New England West, while junior Lindsay Lionetti (Stamford, CT/Greenwhich Academy) was named to the Second Team.

During the season this year Gaudet tallied six goals and four assists for a total of 16 points. Her biggest goal of the season came in the Jumbos' game against Bates in the quaterfinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) tournament. The game was scoreless through both halves and both overtime periods. Gaudet was the only player to convert on a pentaly stroke for both teams and gave the Jumbos the 1-0 victory. The Jumbos continued on in the tournament to be defeated by Wesleyan 1-0 in the semi-finals.

Polverini talled three goals and five assists this season for a total of 11 points. Polverini led the team in assists this season with a stealthy and quiet style of play. In Tufts' September 26th 2-0 victory over Connecticut College, Polverini assisted both Laura Hacker and Dana Chivvis in scoring. In Tufts' huge victory over NESCAC rival Williams on Oct. 21, Polverini scored with 15:40 remaining in regulation time to tie up the game at 1-1. Tufts went on to win the game in two overtimes. Last year Polverini was named to the 1999 Second Team All-NESCAC and the NFHCA Second Team New England West Region.

Lionetti had six goals and two assists this season for a total of 14 points. Throughout the season Lionetti seemed to come alive during overtime periods and sealed many victories for the Jumbos. In Tufts' September 23rd victory over Colby, Lionetti scored the winning goal in the second overtime with only 3:57 remaining on the clock. In a very important game Lionetti netted the game-winner with 3:39 remaining in the second overtime for the 2-1 victory over NESCAC rivals Williams. Lionetti had large shoes to fill this year in the position of center midfield due to the graduation of two-time All-American Meredith Leroux. As a sophomore Lionetti was named to the NFHCA Second Team New England West Region.

Coach Carol Rappoli's team had a good season this year with a record of 10-8 overall and 4-5 in NESCAC. Tufts earned the first seed in the ECAC Tournament after losing to Bowdoin 2-1 in the second round of the NESCAC tourney. The Jumbos won the first round against Bates and then lost to Wesleyan 1-0 in the semifinals.
