FOUR PLAYERS NAMED FIELD HOCKEY REGIONAL ALL-STARS
MEDFORD Four members of the 1999 Tufts University field hockey team that advanced to the ECAC New England Championship Game were selected as AstroTurf/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) New England West Region All-Stars.
Senior co-captain Meredith LeRoux (East Norwich, NY/Oyster Bay) was picked to the First Team, while freshman Dana Chivvis (New Canaan, CT/Greenwich Academy), sophomore Lindsay Lionetti (Stamford, CT/Greenwich Academy) and junior Amy Polverini (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) were named to the Second Team.
LeRoux, a First Team All-American last fall, was the team's leader at midfield. Her influence didn't show in her statistics (2 assists), but the Jumbos revolved around her play. Chivvis finished third in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) in scoring as a freshman with 12 goals and four assists for 28 points. That's the third-best single-season scoring total in team history.
Lionetti joined her high school teammate Chivvs and classmate Barbara Szajda (Farmington, CT/Farmington) as the catalysts of an offense that scored 29 goals in 17 games. She was the team's top playmaker with six assists to go with two goals for 10 points. Polverini was selected as an NFHCA Regional All-Star for the second straight season. She anchored a defense that allowed 1.29 goals per game and added two goals and an assist to the offense.
After a 1-3 start, the Jumbos won seven of 10 games to earn the eighth seed in the ECACs. They knocked off top seed Bates, 1-0 in overtime, in the quarterfinals on Szajda's goal. In the semifinals they beat fifth-seed Williams, also 1-0 in overtime, on a Chivvis goal. The Jumbos lost 2-0 to Wesleyan in the finals to finish the season 10-7. Head coach Carol Rappoli's team has made six-straight post-season appearances.
