Fencing hones abilities that help guide one through life. At Tufts University these qualities have shaped the strong sense of unity and commitment to discipline that characterize the men's and women's teams. The development of these skills has fostered champion teams and accomplished individuals including local colligate champions, national qualifiers and nationally ranked fencers.

Founded in 1975, the Tufts fencing team has continuously provided a supportive community for all of its members. Both the seasoned veteran and the inspired novice can easily find a place on this talented and competitive team. Teammates work hard to advance not only themselves but others as well. This format has made Tufts one of the strongest teams in New England.

Comprised of about 40 fencers, the team enjoys the privilege of being coached by an outstanding group of accomplished fencers. Jason Sachs is the Head fencing coach. Jason is part-time and is also a full-time administrator for the Boston Public Schools. Jason has Doctorate from Harvard University in Human Development and Psychology.

Practices are held on campus in Jackson Gym where the team's facilities include six electric strips. In addition to team practices and the competitive season, individuals are encouraged to participate in outside fencing and competitions. There is a new fencing club, MOE fencing that is with in one and half mile of Tufts (www.moefencingclub.com). In addition to MOE, the Boston Fencing Club and Zeta Fencing Studio are among several venues used by Tufts fencers. Members of the team frequently enter and win local United States Fencing Association tournaments.

While personal accomplishment and success are strongly valued, the Tufts fencing team never loses sight of the primary goal: to create a team unity and a love of fencing that will last a lifetime.
