Caroline Melhado was the top Tufts finisher in the 5K race

BOSTON -- In an open field co-ed race, the Tufts University women's cross country team won the female division of the five-kilometer championship at the Boston Athletic Association's Mayor's Cup on Sunday at Franklin Park.

All seven Tufts runners placed among the top 12 scorers, with their five best accumulating a score of 12 to win the race out of 11 teams. The Jumbos and Simmons were the only two colleges in the field.

Leading Tufts was sophomore Caroline Melhado (Boulder, CO), who finished the five kilometers in a 20:40 time. First-years Evelyn Orlando (Milton, MA) and Melanie Monroe (Melrose, MA) crossed the finish line back-to-back, Orlando in 21:02 and Monroe 21:04. Sophomore Chelsey Vest (Berkley, MA) was the fourth Jumbo scorer (21:27), while sophomore Lauren Flament's (Shelton, CT) 21:32 time was fifth for Tufts.

Tufts heads into the championship season next Sunday at the New England Small College Athletic Conference race hosted by Trinity College.
