WATERFORD, Conn. -- Three members of the Tufts women's cross country
team placed among the top 10 at the NCAA Northeast Region Championship
hosted by Connecticut College on Saturday. The trio will represent the
Jumbos at the NCAA Championship Race hosted next Saturday (Nov. 17) by
St. Olaf College in Minnesota. Tufts finished sixth as a team at the
Regional and did not earn a national berth.
Senior tri-captain Catherine Beck (Brookline, NH) was the
first Jumbo finisher of six kilometers with a time of 21 minutes, 34.9
seconds on Saturday. She was followed by classmate and fellow tri-captain Katy
O'Brien (North Easton, MA), who finished fifth at the Regional with
a 21:43.1 time. In her first NCAA Regional experience, first-year
Stephanie McNamara (North Attleborough, MA) was spectacular with a
22:02.7 finish for ninth place overall. The Tufts trio earned their national
berths individually by finishing among the top seven runners at the
Regional who were not associated with teams that qualified. Beck and
O'Brien will both make their third NCAA Championship appearances, though
first individually.
Also at the Regional for Coach Kristen Morwick's team, first-year Amy Wilfert (Westborough, MA) was 80th overall with
a 23:30.1 time and junior Amy Hopkins (Williston, VT)
was 83rd (23:30.6).
Tufts scored 179 points, 10 behind fifth-place Middlebury. Amherst won the
Regional title with 40 points. Jennifer Adams of Keene State College was
the individual champion with a time of 21:20.1.
Tufts has now qualified as a team or with individuals for every NCAA
Championship Race since the 2003 season.
