Teams: Women's Crew: Team
Overview

The Tufts University women's crew program offers a unique opportunity to both experienced rowers and interested newcomers. Rowing at a new location on the Malden River, with a state-of-the-art two-story boathouse opening in January 2006, the Tufts program is growing in scope and can boast of regional, national and international achievements.
Head Coach Gary Caldwell's program features heavyweight and lightweight teams. In addition to looking for women over 5'9" and 140 pounds for its heavyweight team, the program also focuses on attracting women under 130 pounds for the lightweight squad.
A 1972 graduate of Yale University, Caldwell is in his 16th year on the water with the rowing teams. The recent 2005 season provided several coaching highlights, as Tufts qualified for the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships for the first time. The women also won the Senior 8 title at England's Reading Regatta and reached the semifinals of the Henley Women's Regatta. Caldwell is Director of Rowing for the Eastern College Athletic Conference and was a co-founder of the ECAC National Invitational Rowing Championships Regatta. A four-year coxswain of the men's heavyweight crew at Yale, he was a participant in the first Yale/Harvard tour of Egypt in 1971.
Tufts University crews race with the best of the region's college division schools during the regular season. The squad points toward the season-ending New England Rowing Championships and the ECAC National Invitational Rowing Championships as highlights each year. Tufts also races in prestigious events including Boston's Head of the Charles Regatta and the Henley Royal Regatta on the Thames in England. Since 1990, Tufts crews have medalled at Nationals, raced through to the finalist round at Henley, and won New England team championships.
Aligned in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), Tufts is part of a group of highly selective liberal arts schools which are among the top Division III rowing programs in the country. The discipline and teamwork required from Tufts crew members can be applied to their academic and professional pursuits. A high percentage of Tufts crew alumni attend medical, business, law, and other professional and graduate schools.
The opportunity to receive an outstanding education while rowing at a highly competitive level is an unbeatable combination for the student-athlete at Tufts. Add the lure of the new boathouse, which increases the competitive opportunities for team members, and it is an opportunity that is difficult to pass up.
