GLASSANOS NAMED NESCAC WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF WEEK

MEDFORD By virtue of her game-winning goal at Bowdoin on Saturday (Oct. 5), Tufts University senior co-captain Cara Glassanos (Hingham, MA/Hingham) was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference's (NESCAC) Player of the Week.

A center-back for the Jumbos, Glassanos' goal was just the fourth of her career at Tufts, and the first since she scored in a 2-1 regulation win over Bowdoin almost exactly a year ago. Of her four career goals, three have been scored against the Polar Bears.

Saturday's may have been the biggest, coming in the 94th minute to defeat previously unbeaten, #2 in New England and #13 in the nation Bowdoin (7-1-1). She headed a corner kick by classmate and fellow co-captain Alle Sharlip (Kentfield, CA/Branson School) into the net for a 2-1 victory. She also played part in an excellent defensive effort that allowed Bowdoin just five shots on target in the game. The Polar Bears have the third-ranked offense in NESCAC.

With the victory, Tufts moved into second place in the conference behind Williams with a 3-1 record. It was the team's third straight win overall for a 5-2 mark, good enough to land the Jumbos at #9 in this week's New England Division III poll.

The Jumbos also had a 3-1 victory over Worcester Polytechnic Institute last week. The defense allowed just five shots total in that one as Tufts avenged a 2-0 loss to the Engineers from last season.

Glassanos is in her third season as a starter at Tufts. She started 21 games and scored two goals for the 2000 team that hosted the NCAA "final four" and advanced to the National Championship game, losing 2-1 to College of New Jersey. Last year she started 12 games for the Jumbos.

"Cara puts her whole self into every game, every practice, everything she does," Head Coach Martha Whiting said. "She loves the game and loves Tufts, so I thought for her to score that goal in an important game was very appropriate."

The Jumbos play at Brandeis today (Oct. 8), then continue their NESCAC play at Trinity on Saturday (Oct. 12).
