COOPER, RUDDY TO CAPTAIN 2001 TUFTS WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM

MEDFORD — The Tufts University women's soccer team has named its captains for the 2001 season, seniors Lynn Cooper (Wilton, CT/Wilton) and Katie Ruddy (Mercer Island, WA/Mercer Island). The co-captains began exercising their leadership in a non-conference loss to Babson College on Saturday (September 8).

Cooper led the Jumbos in scoring last season with 11 goals and six assists. She has been a standout forward since her freshmen year, when she tallied 24 points in the season, and has been the team's leading scorer ever since. Cooper is second on Tufts' all-time scoring list for women's soccer with 30 goals and 16 assists during her career. Last year she was named to the First Team All-New England Region. At Wilton HS, she was named to the All-State team in 1998 and received the Wilton Soccer Association Scholarship.

On the defensive side, Ruddy has been a starter since her sophomore year. She was a significant contributing factor to the Jumbos' low goals-against average (0.76) last season. Opposing teams got off only 224 shots against the team last year (as opposed to Tufts' 410), and scored only 18 goals. Ruddy will provide the experience for this year's back line as its only senior. During her years at Mercer Island HS, she was named the MVP of the school's team, which won the league championship in 1997.

Last year the Jumbos were the NCAA National runner-up team, with an 18-4-1 record overall (7-2 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, or NESCAC). The team defeated William Smith College 1-0 in the NCAA National Quarterfinal and later defeated Wisonsin-Stevens Point 1-0 in overtime to advance to the Championship. The Jumbos lost the Championship Game 2-0 to the College of New Jersey.

The team will play its first conference game of the 2001 season at Wesleyan on Wednesday, September 12 (4:30 PM).
