CAMBRIDGE - Sophomore sensation Cat Beck (Brookline, NH) won the 1,500 meter run at the 2006 New England Open (all divisions) Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by MIT. Her time of 4 minutes, 30.45 seconds in a heavy rain is an NCAA meet automatic qualifier and is the fourth-best in the country this season. She edged Providence All-American Meghan Owen (4:31.02) to win the title, out-kicking her in the final 50 meters to record a new school record by almost five seconds.
Beck's 10 points for first was half of the team's 20 points scored, which placed them 11th. UConn won the team championship with a dominating 229.25 points. The Jumbos were fourth among Division III team, with Williams College taking runner-up honors with 74.25 points.
Senior tri-captain Becca Ades (Shelburne, VT) broke her own school record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a hand-held time of 10 minutes, 47.8 for fourth place. Her time converts to a 10:48.04 for NCAA purposes, just missing the automatic qualifying time and ranking seventh in the nation right now.
The 4x4 was the fifth fastest in New England, as sophomore Kaleigh Fitzpatrick (Lynnfield, MA), sophomore Katy O'Brien (North Easton, MA), senior tri-captain Rachel Bloom (Sharon, MA) and freshman Jackie Ferry (Studio City, CA) ran a 3:57.3 hand-held time. O'Brien scored a point as the eighth-place finisher in the 800 meter run with a 2:17.23 time.
