COLLEGE WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD
At Tufts University's Dussault Complex (Somerville, MA)
Saturday, April 1, 2006
SOMERVILLE - The Tufts University women's outdoor track & field team started its outdoor season by hosting the Snowflake Classic at the Dussault Track & Field Complex at Ellis Oval. A strong head wind, which was in the runners' faces on the finish stretch, made fast times difficult, especially in the sprints, but overall it was a good start to the spring season for the 16 teams that attended.
Tufts took third place, scoring 122 points, finishing behind only Division I entries Dartmouth (212 points) and Boston University (137 pts.).
Sophomores Katy O'Brien (North Easton, MA) and Cat Beck (Brookline, NH) provided the meet's top highlights for the Jumbos by running NCAA provisional times in their events. O'Brien made the NCAA provo mark in the 800 at 2 minutes, 15.41 seconds (#5 all time at Tufts) to win the race. Beck made NCAA provo mark in the 1,500 meters, winning the race in 4:39.05 (#2 all time at Tufts).
Senior Rachel Bloom (Sharon, MA) had a strong race in 400 into a big wind, crossing the finish line in 59.45 seconds for third place. Senior tri-captain Becca Ades (Shelburne, VT) ran the All-New England standard in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:30.01), despite falling in the second lap. The third tri-captain, Megan Sears (Washington Depot, CT), had a great throw in the javelin after coming off a serious ACL injury, reaching 31.63 meters for fifth place.
Senior Arielle Aaronson (Somerville, NJ) did the 10k for the first time, winning in 41:24.24 to qualify for ECACs. Sophomore Jenna Weir (New York, NY) also won for the Jumbos in the triple jump with a distance of 10.78 meters. Sophomore Kaleigh Fitzpatrick (Lynnfield, MA) placed fourth in the triple (10.39m).
Other Tufts notables included sophomore Joyce
Uang (Medford, MA) jumping an outdoor PR of 1.57 meters (8th all-time at
Tufts) for third in the high jump. Freshman Katrine Dermody's (Erieville, NY)
8'6" pole vault is fifth all-time at Tufts and was eighth at the meet.
Freshman Paula Dorman (Brockton, MA) threw 38'10 1/2", third at the meet, an outdoor PR and fifth all-time at Tufts.
Tufts scored big, led by Beck, in the 1,500. Junior Sarah Crispin (Auburn, ME) was second (4:54.50), freshman Evelyn Sharkey (Brunswick, ME) took fifth (4:59.28) and freshman Susan Allegretti (Crown Point, IL) was the fourth Jumbo scorer in seventh (5:05.13).
Tufts mixed things up in the relays. The first 4x100 team of Weir, Bloom, sophomore Erica Steinitz (Mercer Island, WA) and Fitzpatrick ran third in 50.53 seconds. The Jumbos did "class" 4x4 relays, and the freshman team of Aubrey Wasser (Richmond, VT), Halsey Stebbins (Chicago, IL), Kathleen Rutecki (Milton, MA) and Jackie Ferry (Studio City, CA) was third overall in 4:13.81.
