NORTON Tufts University advanced to the championship game of the NESCAC Softball Tournament with a 5-1 victory over Trinity College in game six of the tournament on Sunday at Wheaton College.

The Jumbos (27-7) will play Williams College for the NESCAC championship, needing to defeat the Ephs twice to win the title. Trinity's season ended with a 16-15 record.

The game was tied at 1-1 heading into the seventh when Tufts struck for four runs. Sophomore DH Erica Bailey(Scottsdale, AZ) rapped a two-run single and senior 1B Katie Smith (Convent Station, NJ) followed with a two-run home run (her fourth) to make it 5-1.

Trinity loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half of the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate against Tufts starter Sarah Conroy (Biddeford, ME). Paige Blumer (Washington, DC) singled home a run to make it 5-2, but pinch runner Dena Raffa (Shrewsbury, MA) was thrown out at the plate trying to score on the play.

The Bantams took a 1-0 lead with three singles in the third inning, including a Alessandra Diamantis (Bristol, CT) base hit driving home Tori Moshier (Old Saybrook, CT). Tufts sophomore LF Alaina Thiel (Orchard Park, NY) evened the game at 1-1 with her first home run of the season in the fourth, a shot to left center.

Conroy improved to 9-1 with the victory, allowing nine hits and two runs in seven innings. She struck out seven and walked four. Trinity had two hits and two walks against her in the fourth, but could not push a run across. Moshier took the loss for the Bantams, giving up five runs in seven innings.

Bailey finished 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, freshman catcher Mara Dodson (Roswell, GA) went 2 for 4, and Thiel was 2 for 3 and scored two runs for Tufts. Trinity SS Stacy Hills (Menlo Park, CA) led Trinity with a 3 for 4 game. Both teams finished with nine hits.
