BRIDGEWATER -- The Tufts Softball team waited 12 days to play its first game in New England this spring, but it was worth it as the Jumbos earned a tight double-header sweep at Bridgewater State on Thursday afternoon. In their first action since March 26, Tufts took 2-1 and 6-5 wins on the Bears' field.

Freshman 2B Danielle Lopez (Danvers, MA) hit three home runs on the day to lead Tufts. The Jumbos improved to 11-3 overall heading into their home and NESCAC East opener on Saturday versus Bates. Bridgewater State, a 19-time NCAA Tournament qualifier, fell to 6-7.

Tufts freshmen were the leaders of the first game victory. Pitcher Erica Bailey (Scottsdale, AZ) allowed just four Bridgewater hits and no earned runs in seven quick innings of work. She walked no one and struck out five. Her classmates provided the offense as freshman catcher Mara Dodson (Roswell, GA) hit a solo home run in the second inning and Lopez hit a solo shot in the fifth. Bridgewater scored its only run in the fifth when Natalie Barbanti led off with a single and came around to score when a sacrifice attempt by the next batter was thrown away by Bailey. That's all she did wrong in the game, as Barbanti was one of only two Bears to touch third base against her.

Bridgewater's Kaitlyn Gambino was a tough-luck loser in a well pitched game by both sides. She allowed just six Jumbo hits and no walks, but was beaten by the long ball. Lopez and Dodson each finished with two hits for Tufts. Barbanti was 2 for 3 for Bridgewater.

Lopez was 3 for 5 with two home runs and five runs batted in from the leadoff spot in game two. She broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth with a three-run home run that put Tufts ahead 6-3. Bridgewater scored to make it 6-4 on a double by Elizabeth Hallisey in the sixth. The hosts then scored in the seventh to pull within 6-5 and loaded the bases on three Tufts errors. Clean-up hitter Meghan Murphy, who had homered earlier, came up to the plate and lined out to short to end the game.

Sophomore CF Annie Ross (Newton, MA) also had a three-hit game for Tufts. She drove home one of two Tufts runs in the fourth that tied the game at 3-3. Lopez also led off the game with a home run and doubled in a run in the fourth. Murphy's blast brought in two runs for Bridgewater in the bottom of the first. Sarah Conroy (Biddeford, ME) got the win for the Jumbos after entering a tie game in the fifth. Katie Tauber took the loss for Bridgewater.

Bridgewater had swept the Jumbos last year in Medford, 5-1 and 2-1.
