SOMERVILLE -- The Tufts University women's soccer team defeated NESCAC
rival Amherst College Saturday, 1-0, on the strength of another goal by
sophomore Cara Cadigan (Nahant, MA) and a good defensive effort.
In the 20th minute, the 5'3 Cadigan went up and headed in a corner kick
by senior co-captain Martha Furtek (East Falmouth, MA) for the
only goal of the game. Cadigan has now scored five of the team's seven
goals on the season and has four unanswered goals in the last three
games. She netted the winner in the second overtime against Middlebury
last Saturday, and then scored both goals in a 2-0 victory against
Carthage on Sunday. She is the reigning NESCAC Player of the Week.
The Tufts defense earned its third shutout in five games this year.
Amherst had advantages of 10-8 in shots and 5-2 in corners for the first
half, but they did not put a ball on goal. Tufts sophomore keeper
Kate Minnehan (Hopkinton, NH) came up with three stops in the second
half. Amherst sophomore Meg Murphy (Springfield, MA) hit the post early
in the game and finished with a game-high five shots.
Minnehan has allowed just one goal in over 420 minutes of play this
season. Sophomore Lili Ferguson (Winnetka, IL), her Amherst counterpart,
made six saves including five in the first half. Cadigan finished with
four shots, while Furtek and first-year Sarah Nolet (Los Altos, CA)
had three apiece for Tufts.
Tufts, ranked 19th
nationally, has won three straight to move to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the
league. Amherst, which has scored just three goals in six games, dropped
to 1-3-2 overall and 1-1 in NESCAC.
