WORCESTER -- The visiting Tufts University Jumbos, who are ranked 9th in the nation and first in New England by the NSCAA, went to the 87th minute of play to take their fifth consecutive victory, 1-0, at Worcester State College on the rain-soaked turf of Coughlin Field. The Jumbos improve to 5-1 overall, while Worcester State falls to 5-3 on the season.
The two teams battled to a scoreless draw for over 86 minutes before Tufts scored the game-winner after a corner kick by Ariel Samuelson (Newton, MA) came loose in front of the Lancer net and senior Lindsay Garmirian (Amherst, MA) was able to touch it into the net giving the Jumbos the victory.
Worcester State goal keeper Kim Massa (Westford, MA) made four saves on the afternoon, including a beautiful save midway through the second half, punching a Tufts shot over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless. Tufts keeper Annie Ross (Newton, MA) also stopped four shots on the way to earning the shutout, the second of the season for the Jumbos.
The Jumbos have a huge game on Saturday at Bates, which is in first place in NESCAC and has scored 16 goals in four conference games. Worcester State will return to action next Wednesday when they host Keene State College.
