MEDFORD -The Tufts University women's soccer team defeated Bates 2-1 on Homecoming Day in Medford Saturday to win their first game of the 2004 season. The Jumbos handed the Bobcats their second consecutive NESCAC loss.

Senior co-captain Sarah Gelb (Hermosa Beach, CA) gave Tufts an early lead, scoring just over eight minutes into the game. Freshman Lauren Fedore (East Lansing, MI) pushed the lead to two goals with just over 20 minutes to play, striking the ball from inside the 18 and sending it through Bobcat freshman goalkeeper Emily Howieson (Holliston, MA).

Bates sophomore defender Meg Coffin (Westford, MA) found the top right corner of the net on a corner kick with just under 12 minutes to play to cut the lead to one. Bates had several chances to tie the game in the closing minutes, but shots either went wide or were stopped by Tufts senior goalkeeper Meg McCourt (Rochester, NY), who made five saves. Howieson made six saves for Bates.

Tufts improved to 1-2-2, 1-1-2. Bates, ranked fifth in New England at the beginning of the week, fell to 4-2-0, 1-2-0. Tufts gets right back at it tomorrow against Worcester State for a non-league game. Bates will face Amherst on the road on Sunday.
