WORCESTER -- Senior Jessica Trombly (Nashua, NH) scored her second goal of the game early in the second overtime period to lead the 28th ranked Tufts University Women's Soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.
The winning goal was beautifully set up by sophomore Sarah Callaghan
(Northborough, MA), who put a nice
feed across and just outside the goal-mouth. Trombly had an easy shot, beating WPI freshman goalkeeper Kris Nigro (Bristol, CT) from about 5 yards out.
Tufts controlled play after an even first 10 minutes. Trombly hit the crossbar on a shot with 16 minutes to go in the first half, almost putting Tufts up by one. She did that eventually, scoring unassisted with barely three minutes left in the half.
Tufts appeared to be cruising through the second half, but WPI sophomore forward Aggie Ziolek (Londonderry, NH) let go a great shot from outside that tied it at 1-1l, just beating Jumbo junior keeper Meg McCourt (Rochester, NY) with under 10 minutes to go.
Tufts, which lost its first game of the season on Sunday at Bates, improved to 5-1 with the win. WPI dropped to 5-4. Nigro finished with nine saves for WPI, while McCourt made one in the Tufts goal.
