LEWISTON, ME – Freshmen Mary Bucci, Jessie Gargiulo and Kim Alexander scored all four goals to lead the Bates College women's soccer team to a come-from-behind 4-2 win over Tufts, ranked 13th in the most recent national poll, on Russell Street Field on Sunday afternoon.
Bucci got Bates started just over five minutes into the game, scoring off an assist from Becky Macdonald to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. Senior Jess Trombly (Nashua, NH) tied the game for Tufts, scoring unassisted less than ten minutes later.
Junior Sarah Gelb (Hermosa Beach, CA) gave Tufts a 2-1 lead early in the second half off an assist from junior leading scorer Jen Baldwin (Medway, MA), but Bucci's second goal of the day and fourth of the season tied the score at 2-2 five minutes later. Gargiulo gave Bates a 3-2 lead with her second goal of the season with less than 20 minutes to play, and Alexander scored her fourth of the year from Jenna Benson with less than ten minutes to play to seal the victory.
The Jumbos, who had a perfect record heading into Sunday's game, had allowed just one goal in their first four games.
Lynne Antinarelli made six saves for the Bobcats, who were outshot 14-9. Junior Meg McCourt (Rochester, NY) made three saves for Tufts, which fell to 4-1-0, 2-1-0 NESCAC. The Jumbos next play at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Tuesday. Bates, now 4-0-2, 2-0-2 in NESCAC, will face Williams on the road this Saturday.
