MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Tufts women's soccer team used timely offense and strong play by their backs to win the NCAA New England Region Championship against Wheaton College, 3-1. Tufts advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals, where they will take on William Smith College, a 2-1 winner in two overtimes versus Oneonta State in the Northeast Region championship. That game will be played either this Saturday or Sunday. Wheaton ends their season at 20-3.

The Jumbos grabbed an early lead off a corner by junior Katie Kehrberger (Waldwick, NJ), who played the ball to senior Carmen Mikacenic (Seattle, WA) on the far side of the box. Mikacenic fired a shot that was deflected, but junior Lynn Cooper (Wilton, CT) followed with a shot from the right side to give Tufts an early advantage just 1:58 into the
game.

Wheaton rallied to tie the game at 12:52 when Christy McHugh recieved a perfect cross from Ali Bimba on the left side and put it into the back of the net. The Jumbos answered back just under eight minutes later when sophomore Alle Sharlip (Kentfield, CA) played a ball into the box that resulted in a scramble. Cooper came out with the ball, and centered it to senior tri-captain Sara Yeatman (Santa Monica, CA), who beat Wheaton goalkeeper Jessica Broomhead for the score.

Tufts carried the 2-1 edge through halftime and into the second half where, at 47:06, a run by freshman Jess Trombly (Nashua, NH) run was finished by sophomore Elizabeth Tooley (Syracuse, NY), giving the Jumbos a 3-1 lead. The Lyons created chances in an attempt to close the gap, including a lobbed shot by Julie Hickey with 12 minutes remaining that
was tipped by Tufts senior tri-captain keeper Randee McArdle (East Nassau, NY) and hit the crossbar. McArdle was strong in net making five saves in the win, while Broomhead (two saves) and Emily Boeing (two saves) split time in net for Wheaton.

The Jumbos won the NCAA New England Championship and advanced to the national quarterfinals for the second time in three seasons. They did the same in 1998.
